Have you ever watched a couple dance Bachata and thought, "I want to do that!"? It’s completely normal! Bachata is a Dominican rhythm filled with passion, sensuality, and a magical connection that makes it one of the most popular Latin dances in Florida.
If you're a beginner, you might think it's too difficult. We promise you it's not! By mastering just three essential moves, you'll be ready to start your journey on the dance floor.
At Salsa Heat, we know that a strong foundation is key. That’s why we’ve broken down the core movements so you can walk into your first Bachata class with confidence.
Move 1: The Basic Side Step and the Tap (The Foundation)
Before we get to the fancy figures, we must master the core pulse. This is the "back and forth" movement that makes the dance flow.
Lead and Follow: Both partners start with the left foot, moving side to side.
The Count: 1, 2, 3, tap (4) / 5, 6, 7, tap (8).
Connection Key: Use the tap (on count 4 and 8) to add the subtle hip movement. The Leader uses slight pressure on the Follower’s back to indicate direction and maintain the rhythm.
Salsa Heat Tip: Practice the tap without moving! Just touch the floor with your toe and focus on engaging your hip. This is the key to that signature Bachata "flavor."
Move 2: The Basic Turn (The Essential Spin)
The first figure every Bachata dancer must learn is the simple turn. It is fundamental for changing direction and adding dynamic flair to the dance.
How the Leader Executes It:
Preparation: While doing the basic side step (e.g., to the left), the Leader uses their right hand to gently signal the Follower to turn on counts 1, 2, and 3.
The Spin: The signal involves a slight lift and pressure in the hands being held, guiding the Follower to turn under the Leader’s arm.
Return: The Leader finishes the turn on count 4 (tap) and both return to the basic side step to continue dancing.
Tip: Turns are a crucial moment for Bachata connection. Mastering them gives you the necessary flow to dance at any Latin social dance party in Florida.
Move 3: The Open Hand Position Change (The First Displacement)
This move is excellent for starting to travel across the floor and practicing the concept of distance and open connection, which is vital for modern Bachata.
How It Works:
The Open: From the closed position, the Leader releases one hand (usually the left) or both, transitioning into a "hand-to-hand" or "open position."
The Displacement: The Leader takes a step to their left (on 1, 2, 3) while the Follower steps to their right, as if pulling slightly apart.
The Return: On the next count (5, 6, 7), the couple either moves back toward the closed position or simply changes sides, guided by the tension in the hands.
This movement teaches beginners how to lead and follow using only hand connection, without relying on the body frame.
